Did I pack everything?
Do you know that weird feeling when leaving home for a trip? Did I pack all my gear? There was something I wanted to pack but now I can't remember what it was. I'm sure it will completely ruin my trip. Should I go back home to check?
Checklist
If you used a checklist of some sort you probably still feel confident that you packed all you need on the trip. That initial feeling will go away and the trip will turn out great. But did you maybe pack to much stuff? To heavy? I you're new to backpacking you probably have, like most hikers do when they start goin out on longer hikes. Be on the save side, it's important to have all the gear to survive the weekend out in the wild.
Improve
Like most things in life we have to learn and improve. It's the same with packing the right gear for a trip. It's not unusual to unpack unused gear after the first trip. That's not a bad thing. It's important to learn from the experience and pack better next time. But how do you remember these details?
